Al-Djannah (Paradise)
|

Al-Jannah (Paradise) is a portrait of Dubai, where 90 percent of the population are expats and only 10 percent are local Emirati citizens. Dubai was the first Middle Eastern country to open up. Western culture was imported by expat workers. Alcohol and even prostitution were allowed there. A new world of extremes emerged from the desert: the tallest building in the world, the largest shopping center in the world, the largest indoor ice rink in the world, the largest shoe store in the world, the most expensive hotel in the world, artificial islands... Who loves old, historic buildings hardly get their due in Dubai. Except for old Dubai, everything there is brand new. On the other hand, those who enjoy shopping, sightseeing and sunbathing will end up in paradise! Dubai is the ultimate playground of globalization and capitalism, raising questions about authenticity and sustainability.
Dubai is the perfect example of a dual society: on the one hand, protected areas where it is pleasant to live (gated communities, shopping centers and theme parks) and on the other hand an ocean of poverty and chaos. The latter is usually unknown to us when people talk about Dubai. This is clearly also reflected in the segregation between wealthy residents/expats and exploited migrant workers.
A paradise? Seems to me more dependent on who you are and your wealth….
